Play style comes directly from what I want out of the game, I play a lot, I enjoy both PvE & PvP and am looking forward to experiencing all aspects of the game. I am an avid crafter/AH player and will happily amuse myself between play sessions thinking of new ideas to make more credits.
Server choice for me was a no-brainer. PvP servers are more fun, they add more excitement and generally the best PvE guilds will still play on PvP servers.
Dark side or Light side was a lot harder. There were some questions that ultimately had to be answered before I chose where my allegiance lay.
Does either faction have a certain class/spec that I am so interested in playing that I must choose that side?
Which faction will be more appealing to the type of player I want to play with?
Which faction has the lower population?(and why does this matter)
There was no specific class that I felt I must play. I did like the variety of the sith characters but i feel less affinity with the dark side.
This is pure opinion based on my own experience but I believe more young (read:teenage) players will choose Sith, while older (read:20+) players are probably going to split fairly evenly between Sith and Jedi. I couldnt find any hard data to back this up but I will go with my gut feeling until proven wrong.
The Sith outnumber the Jedi but you may wonder why does this matter? Firstly the faction with less players will have shorter PVP queues. Secondly being the underdog feels more heroic and is more fun.
In the end I was left with no choice, practicality wins over aesthetics every time.
